Urine In Mattress
There is nothing more frustrating than lying on a bed and finding it wet with urine. Excessive wetting of the mattress can lead to growth of mildew and mold. The urine not only smells awful, it leaves stains on the mattress. Urine on carpets can also leave embarrassing odors and stains.
Some of the ways to prevent urine in mattress and carpets include:
- Walking the dog when they signal a need to go, training the cat to use the litter box, and children as well as the elderly should use the bathroom prior to going to bed and should be woken up in the middle of the night as well.
- In the quest to prevent urine absorption in the mattress, washable bed pads may be used. They are placed on top of the mattress and can help alleviate incontinence (loss of bladder control).
When cleaning mattress urine, one should do the following:
- Focus on removing the mildew and germs that could be in the stain. To do this, one can purchase a sterilizer like Dettol. Pour some Dettol on a towel and rub to kill germs that maybe in the mattress. These treatments should also be applied on carpet soiled with pet urine. Lysol cleaning solution is also great for killing germs and viruses. Mrs. Clean cleaning agent is an excellent mold remover. Human urine is easier to clean as they drink water but animals like cat and dog have concentrated urine so the dosage should be increased when cleaning animal urine.
- Urine in mattress odor is very unpleasant, repulsive and musty. The longer it takes to work on the smell, the worse the stench. To work on the odor, one should consider using baking soda which can be from any local store. Sprinkle some on the mattress or carpet and let it absorb the smell. Also, creating foam from laundry soap and scrubbing it on the stains will take out the odor.
- When cleaning mattress urine, stains should be handled as soon as discovered to ensure proper removal of the stain. Bleaching the stain is a great way to eliminate stains from the mattress. A Clorox bleach pen may be used. These are available for white and colored fabrics, so the one for colors would be best for all mattress colors. Hydrogen peroxide is also a good solvent for cleaning out urine stains on mattresses. It is a strong cleaner that will take out the stain instantly. It smells horrible but is broken down into oxygen and water on contact with air. A side effect of its use is that it may bleach the mattress.
- Drying a mattress can be done through a blow dryer like the Conair brands. This may be the best method of drying during winter months but in the summer, airing the mattress is advised. The natural rays of the sun will dry out all the wetness in the mattress. If all else fails, a plastic mattress cover may have to be used. This would prevent the urine from seeping down to the mattress.
